Even though I would argue it fell a little short, the Asus ROG Ally was a significant upgrade to the status of affordable Windows mobile gaming, especially with its smooth variable refresh rate screen and plugged-in performance improvements. It was the first real challenger to the Steam Deck. Now, Asus is revealing the ROG Ally X, which is supposed to replace it.
Don't call it an Ally 2; the ROG Ally X, a Windows device that comes in the second half of the year, will have the same AMD Z1 Extreme chipset and 7-inch 48-120Hz VRR screen. It's not exactly the same as the Steam Deck OLED, where Valve unveiled a new OLED display that is bigger, brighter, and more visually attractive with faster response times and less bezels. Additionally, AMD's CPU was modified for improved stability and battery life.
However, because Asus will be able to put a substantially larger battery pack into the ROG Ally X's revised chassis, Asus SVP Shawn Yen tells The Verge that the newly black handheld will have a significantly longer battery life. "We're not looking at 30 to 40 percent more capacity," he states. "We're thinking about a lot more than that."
Longer battery life has reportedly been the most requested feature since Asus's launch. It is not uncommon for the community to connect huge external batteries to portable electronics, even though the Ally may be able to hold a bigger battery pack.

According to Asus, the improvements in the ROG Ally X won't come cheap; unlike the Steam Deck OLED, which effectively replaced Valve's LCD device at the same price points, the Ally X will start at a higher price than the original. The original 2023 ROG Ally will not only still be available, but it may also be eligible for some discounts.
When it comes to a ROG Ally 2, Asus admits that it is thinking along the same lines as Valve and wants to make a true sequel that offers a significant performance boost rather than a minor one.
Furthermore, although it does not plan to provide an aftermarket battery upgrade for original Ally customers, Asus has a big software update in store for them: In addition to a completely revamped appearance and enhanced navigation, Armoury Crate SE 1.5 now lets users exchange button mappings between other Ally games.
Asus says it still believes in Windows. Though Asus cites pragmatic and philosophical justifications for sticking with Microsoft's operating system, such as the desire to have the "inclusiveness of all different game platforms" rather than solely depending on Steam, Meng states that the company does speak with Valve and that "They are very open-minded to looking at other solutions."
