Describe Amazon EBS, Amazon EBS Features and Pricing

High-performance, easy-to-use block storage in any size is available with Amazon Elastic Block Store.

Amazon EBS: What is it?

Using Amazon EC2 instances, Amazon Elastic Block Store offers scalable, high-performance block storage. Several block storage resources can be created and managed using AWS Elastic Block Store:

Amazon EBS volumes: Amazon EBS volumes are available for use by Amazon EC2 instances. Like a local hard drive, a volume linked to an instance can be used for file storage and program installation.

Long-term backups of Amazon EBS volumes are known as Amazon EBS snapshots. Amazon EBS volumes can be snapshotted for data backup. You can always use those snapshots to restore new volumes later.

The Amazon Elastic Block Store's benefits

Scale quickly

Scale rapidly for your most demanding, high-performance workloads, including mission-critical applications like Oracle, SAP, and Microsoft.

Superb performance

You can prevent failures with high availability features like replication within Availability Zones (AZs) and the 99.999% durability of io2 Block Express volumes.

Reduce expenses and storage

Choose the storage solution that will work best for your workload. Volumes range greatly, from low cost per gigabyte to high performance with optimal IOPS and throughput.

Protect

You don't need to build, maintain, and secure your own key management system in order to encrypt your block storage resources. To stop unwanted access to your data, limit public access and place locks on data backups.

Simple data protection

Block data storage on-site and in the cloud can be protected with Amazon EBS Snapshots, a point-in-time copy that can be used to facilitate disaster recovery, transfer data between regions and accounts, and improve backup compliance. By allowing you to create policies that automate several activities, including snapshot creation, deletion, retention, and sharing, AWS's integration with Amazon Data Lifecycle Manager further simplifies snapshot lifecycle management.

How it works

For Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Elastic Block Store was developed as a high-performance, scalable, and intuitive block storage solution.

Use cases

Make your mission-critical, I/O-intensive, cloud-based applications

For mid-range, on-premises storage area network (SAN) applications, move to the cloud. For mission-critical applications, attach block storage that is both high-performance and high-availability.

Make use of NoSQL or relational databases

Install and grow your preferred databases, including SAP HANA, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Cassandra, and MongoDB.

Scale your big data analytics engines appropriately

Scale clusters for big data analytics engines like Hadoop and Spark with ease, and detach and reattach volumes with ease.

Amazon EBS features

It provides the following attributes:

Numerous volume options are available with Amazon EBS, allowing you to optimize storage effectiveness and cost for a number of applications. HDD-backed storage for applications needing high throughput and SSD-backed storage for transactional workloads are the two primary types of volume types.

Scalability: You can create Amazon EBS volumes with the capacity and performance specifications you desire. As your needs change, you may use Elastic Volumes operations to dynamically increase capacity or modify performance without experiencing any downtime.

Backup and recovery: Use Amazon EBS snapshots to create a backup of the data on your drives. These snapshots can then be used to recover volumes instantly or to move data between AWS accounts, AWS Regions, or Availability Zones.

Data protection: Use Amazon EBS encryption to encrypt your Amazon EBS volumes and snapshots. The servers hosting Amazon EC2 instances undergo encryption processes to protect data-at-rest and data-in-transit between an instance and its associated volume and subsequent snapshots.

Data accessibility and durability: io2 Block Express volumes have a 99.999% durability rate and a 0.001% annual failure rate. Other volume kinds provide endurance of 99.8% to 99.9% with an annual failure rate of 0.1% to 0.2%. In an Availability Zone, volume data is automatically replicated across multiple servers to further protect against data loss from a single component failure.

Data archiving: For regulatory purposes, or for future project releases, EBS Snapshots Archive offers a cost-effective storage tier for keeping complete, point-in-time copies of EBS Snapshots, which you must keep for at least ninety days.

Associated services

Amazon EBS is compatible with these services:

Virtual machines, often known as EC2 instances, can be started and managed in the AWS Cloud using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. EBS volumes may install software and store data, just like hard disks.

AWS Key Management Service is a managed service that allows you to create and manage cryptographic keys. AWS KMS cryptographic keys can be used to encrypt data stored on your Amazon EBS volumes and in your Amazon EBS snapshots.

Amazon Data Lifecycle Manager is a managed service that automatically creates, stores, and deletes EBS snapshots and AMIs that are supported by EBS. Amazon Data Lifecycle Manager allows you to automate backups of your Amazon EBS volumes and Amazon EC2 instances.

You can take EBS snapshots, write data directly to them, read data from them, and see how two snapshots alter or differ from one another using EBS direct APIs.

EBS-backed AMIs and accidentally deleted EBS snapshots can be recovered with Recycle Bin, a data recovery tool.

Getting into Amazon EBS

You can create and manage your Amazon EBS resources using the following interfaces:

The Amazon EC2 console

An online interface for generating and managing volumes and snapshots.

Command Line Interface for AWS

A command-line tool that lets you manage Amazon EBS resources with commands in your command-line shell. Windows, Linux, and Mac are all compatible.

AWS PowerShell Tools

A collection of PowerShell modules enabling command-line scripting of Amazon EBS resource operations.

CloudFormation by Amazon

using the use of reusable JSON or YAML templates, you can describe your AWS resources using this fully managed AWS service, and it will provision and set them up for you.

EC2 Amazon Query API

HTTP or HTTPS requests sent using the Amazon EC2 Query API employ the HTTP verbs GET or POST along with a query parameter named Action.

Amazon SDKs are language-specific APIs that enable you to develop applications that communicate with AWS services. There are AWS SDKs for several popular programming languages.

Pricing for Amazon EBS

With Amazon EBS, you only pay for what you provision. For additional information, view Amazon EBS pricing.
